Laser Alternatives to Surgical Weight Loss

Advancements in the field of low level laser technology have led to the development of several effective, non-invasive fat removal treatments that employ cold laser light. While these procedures do not have the dramatic results that you might expect from a surgical weight loss procedure such as liposuction, they are effective at trimming down inches of fat from specific problem areas of the body. Added benefits of laser alternatives include: no long recovery periods or side-effects after the procedure, and minimal to no pain involved. Here are just a few of the more popular laser alternatives to weight loss currently on the market.

Zerona Laser Treatments

The Zerona laser treatment, by Erchonia, is one of the most popular weight loss laser alternatives currently available. Pilot studies presented to the American Society of Lasers in Medicine and Surgery confirmed the treatment’s effectiveness and it was approved by the FDA in 2008. Zerona treatments work by emitting low level laser light into target body tissue. The energy is absorbed by the area’s excess fat. The fat is then broken down and flushed out naturally from the body. Some of the benefits of the Zerona laser treatment include no recovery time, no invasive incisions, and the fact that ongoing fat loss continues for days and weeks after treatment.

Selective Cryoliposis

Selective cryoliposis is a laser fat removal procedure used by Zeltiq Aesthetics, a company based in Pleasanton, California. Selective cryoliposis uses lasers to cool down target tissue areas and induce lipolysis – the breakdown of fat cells. The procedure was developed when a team of researchers found that, under controlled conditions, fat cells are more susceptible to the effects of cold. Selective cryoliposis uses cooling to induce the controlled death of fat cells, which are then digested by inflammatory cells and released via the lymphatic system. Effective Zeltiq treatments take up to two months.

Laser Lipsuction

There are several different types of liposuction lasers. The term “laser liposuction” is a misnomer, as there is no liposuction involved. Rather, aesthetic lasers are used to rapidly dissolve fat in the targeted tissue. Again, the results are not quite as dramatic as conventional liposuction, but the advantage is that the laser procedure can be more versatile in terms of the areas of the body it can be applied to. The procedure also results in the tightening of collagen cells in the surrounding skin, which means you avoid loose or sagging tissue that is a negative side effect of traditional weight loss surgeries.
